Mendocino Bounty

Our County is blessed with the bounty of nature. It is home to a multitude of small farms, artisan producers, cutting edge retailers and an entrepreneurial spirit that is unmatched anywhere. We’ve always been renowned for seafood – salmon, crab and mussels that are as fresh and tasty as can be. Inland the fruit of our Gravenstein apple trees is as prized as our rare Charbono grapes. Picturesque acres of vineyards, old and new, are tendered by passionate growers and winemakers – creators of very fine wines.

They’re interspersed with small farms and olive groves. Pear orchards can still be discovered along the Russian River watercourse, and wild mushrooms and berries grace the forests and hillsides. Wild game like rabbit and deer abounds, and ranches weave in and out around tracts of redwood, conifer and oak woodlands. Along winding country roads you’ll still find authentic roadside stands selling jellies, jams, sweet honey and dried apple slices. This same bounteous harvest from the land and the sea was enjoyed by Mendocino County's first native residents, The Pomo tribe, allowing them to develop a tradition of some of the country's most beautiful basketry.

That spirit of abundance still prevails throughout the county, the first in the country to ban genetically modified organisms (GMO's). Mendocino County's dedication to the land supports a longstanding tradition of organic and biodynamic farming. Many growers were practicing these principles before the word "organic" became commonplace. Eating local is nothing new to Mendocino County – it is, in fact, a way of life here.

Located on the coast, Noyo Harbor remains one of northern California's few commercial fishing ports, and provides wild caught salmon, rock fish and world-famous Dungeness crab. Abalone and sea urchin are harvested along the 129 miles of rugged coastline, also home to numerous species of edible sea vegetables.
